Just prior to the College Coaches Weekend, the Selects players from the 96, 97, 98, and 99 birth years will attend our week-long Residence Camp.  From Tuesday, July 20th through Friday, July 23rd, the players will train with elite level coaches from a wide variety of backgrounds, including college and junior hockey.  This intensive training camp builds up the momentum generated by the College Coaches Weekend, with the players’ energy levels and receptivity to coaching at a peak.

The training the players receive during the Residence Camp is age-specific, with the goal of maximizing each level’s age-related development potential.  All levels will be challenged to develop both their physical skills and their “think-the-game” skills, but an age-specific emphasis will underlie how each level is approached.  For example, there’ll be a significant emphasis at the youngest two levels on the “A,B,C’s” of Agility, Balance and Coordination, as well as on developing their speed and control, because their “window” of optimization for these traits is still wide-open.  At the 96 level, on the other hand, the players are arriving at the optimum age to develop their “train to compete” qualities, and so for them the emphasis shifts.

At every level, each and every player is constantly being evaluated, so that their individual strengths and weaknesses are identified, and so that any personalized “corrections” can take place (e.g. for a player who might be avoiding his left skate’s outside edge, or for one who might be too right-hand dominant).  And at every level, the players will be challenged with drills that emphasize high tempo and pace, as well as with drills and mini-games that help players learn tactical concepts and improve their on-ice situation recognition.  The off-ice training the players receive will focus on developing greater overall athleticism, as well as on honing the motor skills necessary for proper execution of hockey’s complex skills.

During the Residence Camp, players will utilize the dormitories and cafeteria at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois.  All on-ice training, as well as most of the off-ice training as well, will take place at the Chicago Mission Training Facilities at the nearby Seven Bridges Ice Arena.
